Why Billionaires Are Betting Big on Cricket’s Global Expansion

Cricket, one of the world’s oldest and most popular sports, is rapidly emerging as a prime investment opportunity for billionaires and sports conglomerates looking to diversify their portfolios. While American football and soccer (football) have dominated the global sports investment scene, cricket is now attracting serious financial interest, particularly in markets where its full potential remains untapped.

With rising franchise valuations, increased global viewership, and expanding leagues in the U.S. and beyond, cricket could be the next billion-dollar sports industry to explode on the international stage.

The Origins of Cricket: A Sport Rooted in History

Cricket dates back to the 16th century, with its origins in England, where it was played as a gentleman’s sport before evolving into a structured and competitive game. By the 18th and 19th centuries, cricket had spread across the British Empire, gaining immense popularity in India, Australia, South Africa, and the Caribbean.

The establishment of Test cricket in 1877, followed by the advent of One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in 1971 and the revolutionary Twenty20 (T20) format in 2003, transformed the sport into a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Despite its widespread appeal in certain regions, cricket has yet to reach its full commercial potential in key markets such as the United States, China, and parts of Europe but that is changing.

The past decade has seen a surge in billionaire investment in sports franchises, from the English Premier League (EPL) to the NFL and NBA. As valuations for NFL and European soccer clubs skyrocket, investors are now looking at alternative high-growth sports—and cricket is high on their radar.

Key Factors Driving Cricket’s Investment Appeal

  • Exploding Media Rights – The Indian Premier League (IPL), the sport’s most lucrative league, secured a $6.2 billion media rights deal in 2022, rivaling the NFL and NBA in per-match revenue.
  • Global Expansion – Cricket is being introduced in new markets, including the United States, UAE, and Africa, creating fresh revenue streams.
  • Franchise Model Success – Leagues like the IPL, Major League Cricket (MLC) in the U.S., and SA20 in South Africa have adopted the franchise model, attracting deep-pocketed investors.
  • Billionaire Owners – High-profile investors, including Mukesh Ambani, Shah Rukh Khan, and RedBird Capital (owners of AC Milan & Fenway Sports Group), have already staked claims in cricket franchises.

Top Cricket Teams and Their Valuations

Cricket teams, particularly in franchise leagues, are seeing unprecedented growth in their valuations, with the IPL leading the way.

Mumbai Indians (IPL) – $1.3 Billion

  • Owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, this is the most successful IPL team, with five championships and a global brand presence.

Chennai Super Kings (IPL) – $1.15 Billion

  • Led by the legendary MS Dhoni, CSK has a loyal fanbase and one of the highest commercial values in cricket.

Kolkata Knight Riders (IPL) – $1 Billion

  • Co-owned by Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan, KKR has built a strong brand identity and global expansion strategy, with teams in the U.S. and UAE leagues.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (IPL) – $950 Million

  • Backed by tech giant United Spirits, RCB benefits from Virat Kohli’s massive brand appeal.

Delhi Capitals (IPL) – $800 Million

  • A rising franchise with investment from JSW and GMR Group, this team is strategically positioned for future growth.

Cricket’s Growth in the U.S. and Other Markets

While cricket is already a multi-billion-dollar business in India, its biggest growth potential lies in the U.S. and emerging markets like the UAE, South Africa, and China.

Major League Cricket (MLC) – The U.S. Cricket Boom

Cricket is making serious inroads into the American market, with Major League Cricket (MLC) launching in 2023. Teams like the Texas Super Kings, Los Angeles Knight Riders, and MI New York have drawn big-name investors, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

With cricket now set to be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, its popularity in the U.S. is expected to skyrocket, attracting even more investment.

The UAE’s ILT20, South Africa’s SA20, and England’s The Hundred are all gaining commercial traction, helping globalize cricket and drive valuations higher.

The Future of Cricket, Billion-Dollar Expansion on the Horizon

With private equity firms, media giants, and billionaire investors taking notice, cricket is on the verge of becoming a truly global powerhouse.

As American investors look beyond NFL, NBA, and MLB for high-growth opportunities, cricket’s franchise model, strong media rights, and untapped markets make it a prime investment choice.

For sports billionaires looking for the next big thing, cricket could be the home run, or rather, the six, they’ve been waiting for.
